It may be prefaced with "if you want", but for a 1stG student this may sound like an unknown requirement. It's not. You do not have to buy your committee expensive gifts to be appreciated or successful.

She did not describe expensive gifts though. She gave a price range based on where she lives. I know her school. She's right about the unspoken expectations & costs.

But she generalized it. I can't say the exact words because the thread is gone. She said, first gen grad students you might want to save up. You can buy cheaper gifts, but if you want to get something nicer it may cost X, and for 3 to 5 committee members, that could be over 1000

Yeah she said “you might want” not that you have to. This seems to be pretty common so chill.
