Following a number of those insufferable 'advice for ECRs' threads, here's some entirely unsolicited advice/recommendations for perm and secure staff:
1. pay for dinner and drinks at conferences
2. try to converse with ECRs as if we're not wholly green or stupid.

At least in the U.K. many staff have far less disposable income than the tax free PhD students so expecting them to pick up dinners and bar bills unreasonable plus encouraging a drinking culture etc that excludes many ... expense and justify your own drinks against department

And apparently you never will! I’m not explaining this to you, but maybe read up on casualisation and precarity before you go thinking that junior academics have more disposable income than salaried, permanent lecturers.

You never know someone’s financial situation I’ve known many senior staff with financial issues, children mortgages and the dual career issue ... I’d never expect a colleague of any rank to pay my dinner or bar bill at work

You act as if we don’t have expenses. I know many PhD students who have to support a family. I don’t have a stipend, I barely get any work in my dept. But PhDs/ECRs aren’t expecting free drinks and food. In my experience we just say we’ll go for one pint and that’s it.

But the tenured staff, who all have houses and families, will frequently pick up the bill. No, I don’t know their financial situation. But if you think that someone with a salary is worse off than a PhD student? You are wilfully ignorant.
