I have a photo of several great grand uncles in WWI. It was taken the night before Vimeo Ridge, where they fought and died.

My great grandfather was an American who emigrated to Canada and who joined the army to fight in WWI. He met my great grandmother, who was from Scotland (though her parents were Irish), and she moved back to Canada with him.

He was a mechanic in WWII. My grandma told me that she remembers her and her siblings and mother sleeping in one bed, waiting for her father to come home.

She described him, when he returned, as “there but not there.” It sounds like he suffered badly from PTSD but didn’t have much in the way of support for that.

Another great (great?)-grandfather was a woodcarver. Apparently some of his pieces are in a museum somewhere.
