I don't know how to say this, so I'll just blurt it out: enough with the diversity panels! Might be an unpopular opinion, but I do not care. *shrugs* @ me if you like. I do want to hear what you think.

Last con I went to we talked a lot about racism in my field. The panels themselves had one or two, maybe three POC out of eight. Lots of discussion about decolonising the field, de-centering white people. But then the conf failed hard in so many respects for diversity.

Especially, from what I saw and read, for POC and disabled ppl. Their accountability for it wasn’t great either. And yeah, the rest of the conf was overwhelmingly white able bodied people.

The diversity panel then becomes a shield against any accusations.

Yep exactly. The worst part was that one of the panels had a strict no recording/tweeting rule because one of the WOC has been harassed for speaking out against white supremacists. It was filmed anyway by a malicious person and the moderator wasn’t checking the crowd.

Which led to more harassment of this person. And again, as far as I know, no accountability there.
