Why? Those animals are raised only in confinement, on a diet of grains that are grown and milled into feed. Their manure, rather than enriching the soil they're eating from, is collected in noxious lagoons which occasionally overflow and poison waterways.

Meanwhile cattle spend the majority of their life participating in the carbon cycle and fertilizing the soil they graze on before being moved to a CAFO for finishing (for most of them). Lamb is generally raised *entirely* on grass and as such has the smallest footprint.

But again, livestock are only 4.5% of US GHG emissions. A modeling study at Virginia Tech found that even if every single person in the US went vegan, we'd lower emissions by less than 3%.

By far the biggest offenders are transportation and electricity and look, individual consumers cannot fix those systems by buying the right things. We need a drastic overhaul to get fossil fuels the fuck out of the systems.

Because look, the only question about food I have, as a small farmer who deeply believes in doing things sustainably and humanely is this: are you getting enough to eat? Are you being nourished by the food you eat? I want to hear you say yes to both those things.

Don't you let anybody make you feel bad because you bought the on sale package of chicken thighs because that was what you could afford and you need to eat. *You need to eat*. You deserve to eat.

One poor person going veg*n for a year won't make up the carbon emissions from one person's flight from San Francisco to Germany.https://twitter.com/GHGGuru/status/1105686435112325120?s=19 …
🚩Shepherd 🏴 added,
Frank Mitloehner @GHGGuruIf you were to switch from a omnivore- to a vegan diet, you would safe 0.8 tons of CO2e/person per year. One round trip flight from San Francisco, CA, to Frankfurt, Germany, equates to 1.6 tons of CO2e (per passenger). Hence, making that diet switch would be 1/2 of one flight. https://twitter.com/eatcookwrite/status/1105654795795226624 …Show this thread2 replies 31 retweets 135 likesShow this thread -
You eat what you need to be nourished. We need you here with us. Whatever diet your body needs, roll with it without shame or guilt. What you eat is not the problem and never was. You deserve food that nourishes you.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Tip your server, hug sometime you love, and if you haven't eaten dinner then put some food in you.
