A lot of people are upset about Thicc Thor, and I understand that fat suit usage has a specifically nasty history in film. But as a person who gained a lot of weight as a result of PTSD and mental illness? I felt more represented/seen by his storyline than by Captain Marvel.

The audience laughed, but Hemsworth never played it for laughs. Hiding in your filthy house having gained a shit ton of weight and playing video games and talking a big game to faceless voices Online and saying “Who else here killed Thanos?” was just… yeah. I felt that.

My mom struggled with her weight all her life, but especially after leaving an abusive husband. She worked w/a therapist for a while who helped her come to the realization that the weight was a kind of armor that helped her avoid the kind of attention that hurt her in the past.

It wasn’t Thor’s weight that made the Avengers uncomfortable and awkward so much as it was the fact he was IN THE MIDDLE OF A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS AND NONE OF HIS FRIENDS HELPED HIM. The only thing I’d change is the cheez whiz joke. Booze would’ve made more sense.

The scene with his mom was incredibly touching, and again, relatable: who among us hasn’t had their mother gently suggest we eat a fucking salad. When he called Mjolnir and said “I’m still worthy,” I legit cried.

The most powerful part, though, was the final fight scene: fully in possession of his power, there wasn’t any training montage where he ran up and down some steps and lifted heavy. He braided his beard and took a shower, but he was never the god of abs. He’s the god of thunder.

I think it would have been better if Hemsworth went Full Actor on it and gained the weight for the role, but I understand his brand is The Prettiest Chris and he has a shitty fitness app to pedal. But from a story standpoint, it was one of my favorite parts of Endgame.

It’s very possible Marvel will fuck this up in the next Guardian movie by having him lose a ton of weight offscreen covered by a joke, or having Drax make a shit ton of fat jokes, or something. But if this is just Thor now? I’m into it.

Hell, I’d even be fine if the weight loss thematically accompanied his psychological healing from the trauma he endured over Ragnarok and the last two Avengers movies. I trust them less to get that right, but if they did, it would be amazing.

In conclusion: the harm done by putting Thor in a fat suit was significantly less than if he’d gotten fat for the role, lost weight, and started peddling various weight loss solutions. And the story that was told was maybe the first time I felt seen by a superhero movie.

I think the weight and PTSD was very accurate, I suppose I just felt like it was massively cheapened by the cheez-wiz comments and generally from how everyone responded to his appearance.
