One thing to add about that NYT article: there is a kind of person who genuinely believes they can refuse to engage and remain apolitical and neutral. And it’s right to point out the fallacy and moral deficiency of this position.

But equally, it should be pointed out that Richard Utz is not that person. This man has billed himself as a progressive public scholar while making a pattern of publicly undermining and attacking medievalists of color.

For him to say that all he wants is to be left alone to live the life of the mind alone and in peace is grade A disingenuous self-victimizing BS.

This is like the playground bully saying he just wanted to be left alone but the kids he punched kept bullying him. Or like Draco Malloy complaining about getting “attacked” by Buckbeak.

If Utz wanted to be a monk in his cloister, he could easily have kept on doing that without attracting any notice. So what is he doing giving incendiary quotes to the NYT?

This is a clear continuation of his pattern of publicly undermining and, dare I say gaslighting, medievalists of color. And for the NYT to give him a platform for it like he’s a valid neutral authority with a valid non-white supremacist position is beyond irresponsible.

Replying to @byjennytan
I think that PH is also a man who frames himself in this manner, someone who says he is progressive but then goes on to harass, dox, and shittalk POC and others who dare criticize him for remaining friends with a fascist.

Currently he’s playing the victim all over FB by screenshotting any tweets about him and posting them to his many followers. So that’s fun and totally not an example of that white fragility that he denies exists.
