I think he gets identified as Sauron in LotR, but I think they weren’t sure about that identification *until* LotR, because Saruman pooh-poohed the whole thing. Not sure the conflict gets treated in detail anywhere. And the orc is all Jackson.

As I recall, the Necromancer was just a standalone, ill-defined villain in The Hobbit, but then when Tolkien wrote LOTR he was retconned into Sauron.
