6/Thinking so little of your fellow citizens, as in the UK they're happy to help & contribute to the country, instead guidence would be good although you might be surprised how knowledgeable lots of people are .I hope you will think about this again please

Metal detecting is illegal in Ireland. Considering that the person in question was more concerned about posting the find all over social media rather than bringing it to local archaeological authorities, they aren’t the wronged party here.

Mphill, what exactly is the law regarding metal detecting here?

You could have googled it yourself, but here is a link that explains it clearly: https://www.museum.ie/The-Collections/Metal-Detecting-in-Ireland-The-Law …

I understood that, whereas there were no licences available to the general public to search archaeological sites and to deliberately search and extract archaeological objects that it was not an illegal hobby on beaches or open farmland with landowners permission.

That is not what the law says, and I've read it. There does not seem to be a prescription for searching on private land or beaches. Even owning a metal detector is an offense.

As for looking for archaeological objects on their own without a metal detector, I believe that is also illegal, as you need a license to excavate.

How exactly would that be able to be enforced on private land?, it is a nonsense .Nobody is going to seek permission to dig a hole on their own land for *any* reason
