3,000-year-old Bronze Age axe recovered by Gardaí after being unearthed illegally with a metal detector National Museum of Ireland appeals to public to report finds of archaeological significance https://www.museum.ie/Corporate-Media/Media-Information/Press-Releases/April-2019/3,000-year-old-Bronze-Age-axe-recovered-by-Gardai … …pic.twitter.com/stUBQFAUGw

6/Thinking so little of your fellow citizens, as in the UK they're happy to help & contribute to the country, instead guidence would be good although you might be surprised how knowledgeable lots of people are .I hope you will think about this again please

Metal detecting is illegal in Ireland. Considering that the person in question was more concerned about posting the find all over social media rather than bringing it to local archaeological authorities, they aren’t the wronged party here.

Metal detecting can seriously wreck sites and Ireland has had a history of people looting sites for their own gain, in the last 200 years or so.

Metal detectors havn't been around for 200 years & the looting of sites hasn't been limited to Ireland , professional looters are not interested in what is & what is not ,'legal'

No it isn't limited to Ireland, but just because looters will do it regardless of the law, that doesn't mean that the law shouldn't exist.

As I said, these exact same arguments were made in the UK some decades ago - the Archeological community decided to try doing things differently & from the success of it, they never looked back .It has been enormously successful, from the smallest to some of the more spectacula

Damage is still done to sites in the UK from metal detecting. Yes, there have been big finds. But the problem remains that people with no training are disturbing and damaging sites and removing items that should be left in situ to study first.

2/Finds, such as the Saxon hoard found in a farmers field a few years ago - the 2 gentlemen who found that one phoned the Archeologists immediately who then rushed to the scene & excavated 'secretly' for weeks .It will take about 10 years for the museum to complete it's work

3/ There have been more than a few finds like that but mostly it would be small finds that are brought in documented, photographed etc ,It us second nature now to people who love this hobby & has been for a long time. Criminal types don't worry about getting things like licences

4/They're criminal & unfortunately they will always be part of any society- I just think it's self defeating to treat regular people like potential criminals when they are not - they just have a great interest in history .There's ample evidence for success. Why *not* here
