Metal detecting is illegal in Ireland. Considering that the person in question was more concerned about posting the find all over social media rather than bringing it to local archaeological authorities, they aren’t the wronged party here.

Metal detecting can seriously wreck sites and Ireland has had a history of people looting sites for their own gain, in the last 200 years or so.

Metal detectors havn't been around for 200 years & the looting of sites hasn't been limited to Ireland , professional looters are not interested in what is & what is not ,'legal'

I am quite aware aware of the illegalite as you would have known if you'd read my post more carefully - and as for the person posting their find on soc media first?- you've made my point rather well. People DON'T know what to do if they find something .It would be good if they

These people have the internet, they can look it up. And to be quite honest, the discussion around finds in Ireland is quite extensive. And if you've ever visited metal detecting forums, they know they are breaking the law.

The information is easily found online as to what to do when you find material artefacts.
