I’m supporting a friend through the last stages of her dissertation and I can’t believe how traumatic her institution is making this final push. She’s incredible, her work is incredible, and I feel like they’re making up hurdles out of nowhere at this point.

I hope when my first advisees get to this point we can imagine a dramatically different relationship and structure around this process, because nothing is worth the stress they’re putting her through. It’s so arbitrary and feels like hazing, tbh.

PhD advisors, remember your students are people with feelings, that they may in fact have more expertise than you in certain areas, and your positionality and experiences influence the way you read new scholarship.

and it’s ok if dissertations have a couple typos. No one reads them anyway.

So glad to have supportive supervisors, because I know so many people who’ve been left to the wayside :/ Many of them women.
