According to Harper’s Weekly, Philip Bacon was an Assistant-Superintendent of Freedmen who “established the first school in Louisiana for emancipated slaves, and these children were among his pupils. He will soon return to Louisiana to resume his labor.”

The Philip Bacon papers (1862-1867) are held in the William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan. https://quod.lib.umich.edu/c/clementsmss/umich-wcl-M-4717bac?view=text …

The inclusion of “white” slaves in these photographs acted as potent anti-slavery propaganda during the Civil War aimed at a Northern white audience. These formerly enslaved children were “the offspring of white fathers through two or three generations.”pic.twitter.com/sMEXDB9Ozd

Mary Niall Mitchell: “What such a campaign implied, of course, was that images of formerly enslaved black children were not enough to spur many Northerners to boost their support for the war and aid freed people in need.”https://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/01/30/the-young-white-faces-of-slavery/ …

Here’s the kicker. In my review of Irish surnames & slave-ownership I found 150+ Irish surnames among slave owners in Louisiana (1850) e.g. Brady, Burke, Carroll, Connolly, Collins, Cullen, Crowley, Darcy, Devane, Hickey, Hogan, Keane, Lynch, Mahoney, McCormack, Murphy, &c.

This is extraordinary. According to historian Jean-Pierre Le Glaunec the show ‘Slav’ includes the presentation of this image which the producers falsely claim depicts a black slave and an “Irish slave”. These are the *same children* which I discussed above https://montrealgazette.com/entertainment/arts/dunlevy-slav-critic-silenced-and-debunking-the-irish-slavery-myth …pic.twitter.com/uWbK6CqAVY

This verified twitter a/c is using Irish history on #StPatricksDay to push racial slavery denialism. When challenged by @dyllyp about the inaccuracy of his rhetoric, he replied by sharing a list of overt white nationalist propaganda about American slavery.pic.twitter.com/anhWtRGdyp

If you look at the final image you can see the source for his propaganda, the Daily Kenn, a white nationalist blog which is frequently promoted by the aforementioned Neo-Nazi Daily Stormer site, inc. his interview with the former Grand Wizard of the KKK David Duke in 2016.pic.twitter.com/3lsERNwOK4
