In medieval times, the only people who could read and write were monks. So as a layman, the ability to read and write set you far apart from the average person. Those were skills that, being outside of the clergy, could quickly set you on the path to riches.

Well once Middle English was developed, there were loads of books written in it. And Old English has a good deal of work as well. England promoted the vernacular relatively early on.

But you are right, you can’t go back in time with modern English and expect that you’ll be lauded. Chances are they will think you talk strange and you write even stranger.
