OK my personal amazon wishlist, as opposed to my cow wishlist, is now full of Xenophon. I'm still SO MAD people made me read fucking Plato and motherfucking Aristotle in my youth instead of my buddy Xenophon.

the boyfriend read the Anabasis awhile back and he loved it and I was so pleased that he chose to read the Greek classics without me pushing them on him haha (because of how it intersects with his Irish poetry research).

yeah he came up a lot in my undergrad for my Greek history courses but the Anabasis wasn't stressed as a really significant source, that I recall. I haven't read the whole thing, just parts, but having a personal account by a mercenary is like...idk it's amazing.

Oh my god it's the best trash fire of a military campaign ever, seriously. And he keeps sneaking in these gossipy asides and shit and it's just amazing.

yeah it's great, I think we're lucky that it survived. What I find interesting is that he says he's not the only person like himself writing at the time too, if I recall.
