I think that K just tended to get changed to C all around when transliterating it into English. Not sure there was a specific reason for it but I might be wrong.

Yeah, this ^^^^. A lot of classical Greek authors and characters we know via the way they were transmitted to us via Latin.

Classical Rome was pretty bad, yes. Although fun fact: Greek was a high-status language in the early medieval period, but it ended up being more associated with Rome and/or Christianity than Greece thanks probably to Constantine and the Eastern Roman Empire.
