Does anyone have any recs for traditional Japanese or Chinese music? Vocals/instrumental both okay.

Yoshida Brothers are a good mix of traditional Japanese and some modern pop. There is a Chinese group that I think goes by 12 Girl Band in English that is also a mix. For Taiko, Kodo as well as Joji Hirota & the Taiko Drummers.

These are all instrumental, btw, I never got into the traditional vocal music. But the Japanese term for that genre is "enka" so if you search that you should find some options.

I don’t think Enka is what I’m looking for, when I search. Tends to be more modern from what I can tell.

Hmm. How traditional are we talking? Historical? Most groups I'm familiar with work with the traditional instruments but I don't know if the music itself is specific historical tunes.

I don’t know how else to describe it. Historical might not be the right term because there are presumably modern musicians composing this stuff. Use of traditional instruments (like a guzheng) in traditional music styles I guess.

Hm. I'm sure it is out there, but you might need to go searching in the specific languages for it. I think a lot of what gets marketed in English is the more modern/mixed styles.

To be more specific on my recs: Yoshida Bros use traditional instruments (a lot of shamisen) and traditional styles but sometimes layer in pop sounds or themes as well. They have a huge discography though so worth searching through.

Yeah I checked them out, but to be quite honest I don't want to comb through an entire discography to find a song that doesn't have modern stuff interspersed throughout. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not what I'm looking for.

Totally fair. "Folk music" is usually the label in English, but it covers a broad range of different styles. Best bet is to find someone with the language skills to know what to search on Chinese or Japanese language sites. :/

I don't really feel comfortable in search someone out for that, because that is putting in labor that they shouldn't. I'd love recommendations from Chinese and Japanese people, but I can't just go find someone to demand that or their time.
