Er. They really didn't. Medievalists and historians don't even use "the dark ages" to define the era between the Roman Empire and the Renaissance anymore. Recipes from the period include spices imported from along the Silk Road, clothes included fabrics, etc.

Yes, trade may have slowed but never stopped. Where did early medieval kings and nobles get silk and other luxury goods?
