I wanted to do ballet as a kid. My parents refused. I cheered briefly in high school. My parents made me quit. I was a high school theatre geek who had potential to study seriously. My parents didn’t support. I’m still gay. Denying me joy and expression didn’t change that.

Anyway, James Baldwin's quote is the cardinal rule you should always use: "We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist.”

Once we defeat poverty, I predict that 80% of what manifests now as Nigerian culture, whether good or bad, (including all our current public conversations) will change so radically, it will seem like a different country. Most of our debates are premised on and steeped in poverty.

Be weary of “Soleimani was bad, he had it coming, if you disagree you must support his actions” analysis. Saddam Hussein was evil and military action against him had repercussions we’ll deal with for decades. Good journalism and analysis is critical during crises like this.

Sometimes going home is a reminder of why you left. Sometimes going home is a reminder that the people you love at home need you. And sometimes it’s both, and the trauma of the paradox is confusing and unsettling all at the same time.

when the rubber meets the road, you'll find ultimately the African bourgeois isn't really upset at the things they profess on Twitter to be outraged at. they're more nervous about being racially profiled at airports & shopping malls in the West than the state of affairs at home.

My ex did this once except it was 365 notes in the jar and I had to send pictures of the one I opened every day. It was like being in a Chinese labour camp.

Angst over subsidizing rich kids going to college shows US debate can't get past idea of college as a credentializing, inequality-reinforcing arms race. Maybe college should be free because education is a cornerstone of human civilization, not because it will get you a raise.

this is a nuanced, more informative take on migration (especially of the irregular kind) you'll ever need to read than anything you'll typically find from more "mainstream" sources. I quite appreciated the note of realism the article ends with.
