There's been a shift in communication over the last, say, 10 years, and it's so much harder to read tone into what people say (especially online) that any kind of positive social interaction (the smile, in this case) can be misconstrued as genuine interest.

It goes beyond that too. It's literally the only interaction they have with the opposite sex and they basically become obsessed with that one person and they don't notice anyone else. And it's almost always at the coffee shop, grocery store or it's a co-worker.

True, and there's often a lack of recognition of the context of that interaction. The barista is supposed to be polite, and when she asks how your day is going, it's part of the schtick, but those dudes don't know that.

The biggest problem is the only place these guys can seem to turn for some understanding are these toxic communities that put the blame on everyone else. They don't encourage therapy, they encourage entitlement and anger.

I’m not sure it’s the only place they can turn, but it’s definitely the only place that they get the feedback they want. A good chunk of them don’t want to hear that women aren’t sex robots that give out blowjobs for ‘niceness’. Hearing ‘maybe it’s you’ is too damaging.

It's the place they know that they can turn to be vindicated. I don't want to say there's empathy in that community, but there's at least an understanding, and a bunch of "hey, me too!"

Yep, exactly. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being lonely and wanting to talk to someone about it but this isn’t just loneliness - there’s a lot of misplaced and misdirected hate there. Derek broke it down pretty well but I’ll add a word - Fixation.

And I wonder, too, if there's an element of it where they see everyone else doing it and feel isolated somehow.

Our social media culture already screws up our self worth it's proven. You compare your reality to carefully manicured snapshots and sneak peaks where for some god awful reason people feel they need to desperately make themselves look better to the outside world.

but at the end of the day, these MRA/Insul/Red pill swallowing guys are all shithead assholes who don't deserve better in most cases.

Even the name pisses me off. ‘Involuntarily Celibate, or Incel’. Doesn’t that just scream ‘I’m perfect and have no flaws so clearly the reason I can’t get laid is women’s fault’.
