In April 1933, as Rector of Freiburg Universuty, #Heidegger Nazified the university with exemplary alacrity. The initial law purging Jewish faculty had two exceptions: front-line soldiers from WWI and professors appointed under the Kaiser (i.e. not in the Weimar democracy).

#Husserl fell under the second exception and could have remained on the faculty in#Freiburg in 1933. However,#Heidegger went above the letter of the law to extend the purge to Husserl by arguing that Husserl was already above the mandatory retirement age. (I have receipts)Show this thread -
This action was typical of
#Heidegger's Rectorate. It is for this reason that the Ministry of Education in Berlin held up#Freiburg University under Heidegger, alongside#Heidelberg and#Göttingen, as exemplary for the implementation of of "Aryanization" and Nazificaiton at UnisShow this thread -
Any reading of
#Heidegger that overlooks his immense contributions to#Nazism as a university administrator risks being severly misguided and, quite simply, ill informed. Every Heidegger scholar should spend some time with the "Aryanization" files of the Freiburg Uni Archive.Show this thread -
The gist of the problematic
@Quillette article was that#Heidegger and#Schmitt represented a strand of German conservatism that could have rescued#Nazism from itself. This is factually incorrect and a very dangerous political move.Show this thread -
As Rector
#Heidegger was 'entrepreneurial' in every sense of the word. That's what the#Nazis wanted from bureaucrats in the early stages of their revolution. Heidegger had the kind of Führer-Persönlichkeit they prized.Show this thread -
#Heidegger did not fall out of favor with the regime nor did he have a political awakening. As was typical of ambitious#Nazis, he was sidelined by his rivals (Alfred Baeumler, Ernst Krieck, Erich Jaensch) who temporarily allied to attack Heidegger before attacking each other.Show this thread

I suppose it was inevitable that this crowd would discover Heidegger and Schmitt

Yep. For this crowd, Ayn Rand is used for training wheels, then they hop onto those two guys when they've started shaving.

A quick write up of their ideas? Did you read the piece? It was explicitly about their relationship with Nazism, and it contains these passages. I'd like to see a more detailed critique of the Quillette piece because it's a fascinating area I don't know a whole lot about.pic.twitter.com/CcUcmKg0hi
