Police have tons of mil gear, but they're not exactly "militarized." I know of plenty of line infantry units more compassionate than this.

@AdamWeinstein Also, we contained riots in Baghdad next to mosques with less violence than the police are employing.

.@adamweinstein @joshuafoust The use of a single grenade launcher in LA during a siege with Black Panthers in 1969 required DoD approval

@AdamWeinstein they seem more like they're "playing army" because it's the closest they'll get to real action.

@adamweinstein @joshuafoust Actually patently false. They've been militarizing (tactics and gear wise) for decades for 'the drug war'

@AdamWeinstein Cuz infantry are trained & often professional. Cops are sometimes thugs & enforcers. #Ferguson @PhyllisCopeland

@AdamWeinstein A great point. We trust our military because of trained professionalism. But w/o it the weapons are irresponsibly dangerous.

@AdamWeinstein @keithjs Yes. Armies can't make civilians immediate targets without being guilty of a war crime.

@AdamWeinstein @ChrisWarcraft is there anyway to legislate that only the military can have military gear? No reason for cops to have this.

@adamweinstein @joshuafoust The shift, and the 'drug war's role in it is very well detailed in @radleybalko's book…
