The Russia investigation is immensely important – but if we let it distract us from the way Trump Admin policies are hurting American on a daily basis, we are doing a disservice to our responsibilities as a Congress.

As the shutdown hits two weeks, it's important to remember what Trump said Dec. 11. Trump: If we don't get what we want, one way or the other... I will shut down the government ... So I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it.

Excuse me? The president's war powers are reserved for genuine national emergencies, and can't be invoked simply because he doesn't get his way. Keeping up with the daily barrage of Trump's antics can be exhausting, but we must not become inured to this authoritarian behavior.

One thing we have the power to do is ignore the obviously bad faith and hypocritical condemnations about coarse language from Republicans. Let them freak out about it in their little echo chamber. The rest of us have real problems to deal with.
