What's even more pathetic is it's all driven by the guns, ie, feeling the need to prove a particular weapon is powerful enough to kill such a large animal.

It's actually worse than that. It's people, overwhelmingly men, possessing a weapon and ammunition that they know is powerful enough to kill, say, a rhino or elephant, but whose fascination with that destructive power requires them to cause it to happen.
