He did say corporations and Wall Street. “And yes, in this bargain there are lots of jobs—jobs on Wall Street, or in Hollywood, or in Silicon Valley. Because the truth is, the cosmopolitan economy has made the cosmopolitan class an aristocracy.”

There is an entire American tradition of right-wing nationalist language that frames a herrenvolk middle against an underclass of racial and ethnic others and an overclass of the wealthy, defined primarily as cultural elites and often identified as Jews.

It seems much easier to believe that the right-wing evangelical Republican is tapping into that vein of American thought rather than embracing some left-wing critique of the extant economy.

Especially since Hawley is as reliably anti-immigrant and anti-safety net as any other Trump-era Republican, and seems to want to use the state to bolster traditionalist morality and protect local sources of hierarchy and authority.

I have paid close attention to Hawley. He’s not your standard Republican. He’s the only Republican who went after the FTC for laxity in dealing with FB. He attacked corporate concentration in general.

This is completely unresponsive to the observation that Hawley's anti-corporate language is in service of what seems to be a herrenvolk conception of the American populace. Are you so focused on your hobbyhorse that you can't see this?

Evangelicals were part of the Roosevelt coalition. And Hawley’s rhetoric is nowhere near Roosevelt’s first inaugural, a ‘day of national consecration’ in which he denounced ‘the money changers’ in ‘the high seats of the Temple.’

The problem with the concentration of power and capital is the concentration of power and capital, not the fact that the people benefiting directly from that concentration are “cosmopolitan,” which they are not, particularly. That’s why Trump cut their taxes.

Cosmopolitan is the word they use for themselves, mostly. Or did until someone said it derisively. I agree that monoglot urban liberals are trying to flatter themselves for being adventurous on Seamless.

The financial elite doesn’t order seamless, Michael. This conflation of the relatively diverse creative class of new york city with a financial elite whose resources and political influence dwarf theirs is increasingly absurd.

It seems fairly obvious that there is a coherent urban professional class that is mobile between cities, socially interconnected through educational and professional ties, and--like every other such group--interested in pursuing its class interests politically.

That’s true, and they are also neither the county’s financial elite, nor are they responsible for the concentration of power and capital. The sleight of hand here is necessary to pretend this is about economics and not boilerplate right wing culture war with new language.

This conflation is central to the conservative nationalist rhetorical strategy. No matter how furiously it is denied, the idea of nationhood is ethnocultural, so educated urban whites pose a problem solved by identifying kombucha yoga mat culture with globalist vulture capital.

I believe that the real reason Republicans have suddenly decided that the "send her back" chants are politically too much to bear is that it reveals the ethnocultural roots of this nationalism in an undeniable way, to those very same educated whites (though many are suburban).

I know this isn't the point, but the idea that the financial elite doesn't order Seamless has got to be the most wrong thing ever printed on this website. I bet the average investment banker could tell you the seamless budget and ordering hours at every shop he's ever worked.
