The English adverb is basically the lumber room of grammatical units. They're impossible to define as a single, unified type. Anyone bellowing "never use adverbs" should be forced to write a monograph defining them with necessary and sufficient conditions.
-
Whoever commands “never use adverbs” should be required to express that advice WITHOUT using the adverb “never.”
