Cool post, nice and clear I’m actually less interested in ‘how much’ you can preload as ‘what sort of things’. I think about prey animals that can walk/run shortly after birth; part of the prior is embodied but there will be nervous system things too, and...

yes indeed, we have very little idea how we preload the ability to stand or swim, or build a nest, or fear a snake, or butt heads during mating. or have the capacity to learn language somehow these things are in the genome, and read out to form an appropriate circuit. but how??

but let's be slightly more careful here @TonyZador before the Gottleibian's comment again about your imprecision.

I do think if @TonyZador read the books covering Gottlieb's (and Mark Blumberg, Zing-Yang Kuo, Eleanor Gibson, and Patrick Bateson) empirical work it might give him insight into how behavior develops, and why us Gottleibians dont think you can reduce behavior to circuits or genespic.twitter.com/ZgiDBEh1fI

I think there are 2 separate issues. First, to what extent do genes make a chimp different from a human or a mouse? I think the answer is pretty clear here Second, are genes (or circuits) the right level of analysis for progress? I think that is more open for discussion

i personally am spending most of my time on the circuit, and more recently genetic, levels in my own research. But i also believe strongly in paying close attention to behavior. it's not either/or. All levels are needed. Kumbaya.

Awesome talk by Blumberg on how the genome instructs the construction of a machine that executes a learning procedure... all on the way to fundamental motor behaviors that appear very early in infancy... http://bcbt.specs-lab.com/bcbt15/node/135  ML relevant even to how innate behavior may arise...
