Techno-utopians love to imagine that humanity will build massive geoengines that extract carbon from the atmosphere and store it safely in solid form. The bad news: such machines would need to be deployed at almost inconceivable scale. The good news: the machines are called treeshttps://twitter.com/markbao/status/1187549725341302784 …

Summary: restore 900 million hectares of land and prevent it from being desertified. That's a lot – about the size of the Sahara. What it does: Lock carbon into the soil (presumably by growing crops / planting trees?). Result: 15-20y stabilization of atmospheric climate change.

The bad news again: We still need to plant ~1 trillion trees, about ~11% of the land area of the planet

This paper claims 0.9 billion hectares; Earth’s land area is 14.9 billion hectares; that’s 6%. (I haven’t verified their reasoning.) I still agree that 6% of the planet is “almost inconceivable scale,” but estimated cost is only hundreds of billions of US$ https://science.sciencemag.org/content/365/6448/76 …pic.twitter.com/1qSu5d1yER
