A career is what you do, not who you are. New research: kids are more interested in science when they're encouraged to think about it as an action ("doing science") than an identity ("being a scientist"). #TuesdayMotivation:https://digest.bps.org.uk/2019/05/16/kids-are-more-motivated-to-do-science-than-be-a-scientist-a-finding-that-could-help-address-the-professions-diversity-problem/ …

@AdamMGrant But that's what a scientist does. How come it's only applicable to science and not to other fields? Doctor, Musician, Teacher, Psychologist ...

Excellent point. My little brother LOVES science as an activity. He'll do any experiment or game that requires creativity and calculation. Its play time for him

Amen. I've often said that teaching is something I do......."teacher" is not what I am. It does not limit or define me. If this means I'm not in the cult, so be it.

This also makes sense in terms of how the job market is changing: More portfolio careers and contract work, the 'gig economy' etc. We should perhaps move towards encouraging kids to think about skill-sets, rather than job titles.

Another argument in favour of focusing on *doing* and skill-sets over *being* and job titles is that fact some job roles will no longer exist in the future. There was some Australian research about this a few years back:https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2016/nov/24/our-careers-education-is-flawed-we-need-to-think-about-skills-not-jobs …
