Early in the pandemic, there were clear signals from China and Italy about impact of uncontrolled COVID-19 transmission. Now there are signals from multiple countries about what happens if measures are substantially relaxed. It would be profoundly naive to ignore them.

Has the mortality rate gone up? It hasn’t in the US despite its huge spikes.

Is there an example of region which already have a lot of deaths (over 0.04% of population), that have relaxed and are showing significant rise in infections? (as inferred by % positive tests)

Despite clear signs, UK chose to ignore them and later said "we didn't know about the virus". Expect the same later in the year. There is no willingness to learn from the experiences of others.

I agree. We (human societies) can live alongside this virus without it going exponentially through populations but it requires constant change in behaviours by everyone and organised, dedicated, fast public health and health care

That said the sooner we can change the fundamentals of the biology of infection (vaccines) or biology of the disease (treatments) - with really good progress on both fronts happening worldwide (I have soft spot for UK lead progress, but everywhere counts)- the better.
