My (half-serious) pet theory is that the mysterious (& possibly dubious) Olson's extinction in the mid-Permian was from hunting. Like the Pleistocene megafauna extinctions, it seems to have killed all the big charismatic animals on land ("pelycosaurs") & skipped over marine life

Also, because there are all sorts of crazy geochemical signals from just before the K-Pg (probably from Deccan volcanism) I'm holding out hope we discover that the Chicxulub impact was an dinosaur asteroid mining mission gone horribly wrong

Such great lines of inquiry! Nice nice. Puts our presence on Earth in energetic perspective with a wide scope for future success based on awareness of past. Keep inquiring please. Perhaps oil fields we think are natural were stored up as ancient capacitors? UFOs ancient a.I.?

We'd almost certainly have noticed mining activity by a previously technically advanced civilization. Most mineral assets are very old and don't regenerate quickly and we'd notice depleted sources in low-hanging-fruit locales.

Mr. Frank, that was a very interesting article and topic. Our arrogance makes it difficult sometimes to see possibilities or scenarios.

It always worth reading the "New Scientist" series of articles of this subject, on how long would artifacts of human civilization remain, after mankind was wiped from Earth.
