Labor’s budget leaves millions behind. It’s a betrayal of renters, students, jobseekers, young people and everyone doing it tough. Here’s my budget reply speech.

Labor's giving this guy a $9000 tax cut while people starve on $52 a day.

Talk about a rich flex. 💰💪 Melbourne businessman Adrian Portelli has successfully craned in a $3 million McLaren Senna GTR into his $39 million penthouse, located on the 57th floor of the Sapphire by the Gardens building. DETAILS: nine.social/cd6 #9News

In its current form, this Bill fails renters completely. Even in the best case scenario, it'll see more people waiting for public housing, more people struggling to pay the rent, more people homeless and more people evicted. Labor needs to negotiate with us and fix this Bill.

BREAKING: Labor just tried & failed to shut down debate and force a vote on their housing bill in the middle of negotiations, rather than work with the Greens and pass a plan that helps renters and invests billions in public and genuinely affordable housing 👇

$2.85 a day for Jobseekers. $9075 a year in S3 tax cuts for millionaires and politicians. There's no way to spin this budget that makes sense. These aren't hard choices - they're bad choices.

PM in Question Time saying the budget would’ve been different if the Greens were in charge. Yeah, it would’ve been a good budget. 🦷Dental into Medicare. 💰Tax on multinationals super profits. ⛽️Ending fossil fuel subsidies. 👩‍🎓Wipe student debt. 🏡JobSeeker above poverty line.

Labor may have given up on ‘no one left behind’, but we haven’t. We’ll fight to make sure this budget does what every government should: give people what they need to live with dignity.

Although the Treasurer hasn’t mentioned climate in his speech, the Greens in the balance of power have secured over a third of the Budget’s new climate spending, with a $2b package to help households, businesses and public housing get off gas.

Offshore detention costs have blown out by $100 million – a 26% increase! Locking up innocent asylum seekers is unnecessary, barbaric, and extremely expensive.

The gas corporations win big in this Budget. Labor’s raising more from lifting student debt than from their changes to the gas tax! The Greens will fight to make the greedy coal and gas corporations pay their fair share.

We’re also seeing the first spend on nuclear submarines. Labor is spending $9 billion to buy subs that will make us less safe. It’s a small downpayment on the huge $368 billion cost. Imagine what that could be spent on.

The rumoured JobSeeker increase for over 55’s was also confirmed – they’ll get slightly more under these changes. They’ll still languish in poverty. Everyone deserves to live with dignity, whether you’re 20 or 60.

If you’re on JobSeeker, you get an extra $2.85 a day. You’ll still live in poverty. Commonwealth Rent Assistance has gone up by $1.12 a day. Average rents have gone up 10 times that in the last year. And 5.5 million renters get nothing.

Labor knows this. Tonight, they have chosen a surplus over supporting people who counted on them. They’re continuing with Stage 3 Tax Cuts, nuclear subs, and handouts for wealthy property investors and fossil fuel corporations.

Right now, millions of people are living in poverty. Queues at foodbanks are growing, people are being forced to the brink of homelessness by skyrocketing rents, and many are forced to choose between paying the bills and putting food on the table.

Labor’s second Budget is a betrayal of people who were promised that no one would be left behind. Budgets are about choices. Labor is choosing a surplus over supporting people who were counting on them.

A budget surplus doesn't mean anything if you're stuck on $50 a day or living out of your car. Budgets are about choices. Every dollar of surplus is a dollar not spent lifting people out of poverty.

The PRRT was famously written with the gas sector to make sure they didn’t have to pay tax. Labor’s weak tweaks are too. Co-authored by the businesses facing the tax, Labor continues a legacy of corporate capture that’s seen government after government fail to tax coal and gas.

Gas tax "hit" is so puny that even APPEA's gas lobbyists reckon it's good. Chart here by @DanielBleakley tells the story #auspol michaelwest.com.au/fake-reform-ji

If they can afford tax cuts for billionaires, they can afford to lift people out of poverty. It’s not a tough choice and it never was. It’s a simple one.

The community pressure to raise the rate of income support is working. They are feeling the heat. And we are not going to let up if Labor's solutions don’t even scratch the surface of the crisis. Millions need urgent help right now. Labor cannot leave them behind.

Labor’s budget looks set to raise more money from rising student debt than the weak gas tax on multinationals. Billionaires will get a tax cut while job seekers get poverty. Property moguls get handouts while renters get screwed. Labor’s choosing billionaires over battlers.

It’s high time for a Republic. The monarchy isn’t just irrelevant. For many, it still embodies centuries of inequality, oppression, & colonisation across the world. We shouldn’t still be swearing loyalty to a foreign king. It’s time for Republic, Treaty, & our own head of state

Got a HECS loan? This year, you'll see your student debt rise by 7.1%. That's $1700 extra for the average person. We've got to wipe student debt.

It shouldn't matter whether you're 20 or 60, have just lost work or have been looking for a while - you deserve to be able to live with dignity. No one deserves to live in poverty. We've got to lift everyone's income support above the poverty line.

Skyrocketing rents are not a future problem. This is a now problem. Every day people are skipping meals. Choosing between medication and paying rent. Government should make sure people have what they need to live with dignity. Freeze rent increases now.

The PM has finally admitted the are right. Labor can freeze rents. Only weeks ago he called rent freeze ‘pixie dust’, but now it’s on the table at National Cabinet. Labor now has no excuse for not freezing rent increases for 2 years and capping rent rises after that.

Labor: stop saying it’s too hard. A 2-year freeze on rent increases is possible. Enough public housing to end homelessness is possible. Lifting Jobseeker and all income support above the poverty line is possible. These are urgent priorities. Budgets are about choices.
