2/ These risk compensation arguments are paternalistic, w/ little data to support them (similar arguments made in the past saying seat belts would lead to more reckless driving...), & led to confusing messaging for the public regarding masking early on in the epidemic.

3/ We should be giving people all of the protections that they need; encouraging layers of interventions, including masking, physical distancing, use of rapid antigen tests as they scale up; people should be given more tools, not fewer; & better advice on how best to use them.

Even if it did, masking is far more effective than distancing, anyway, for the purposes of this argument. Aerosols can easily travel across a room and linger in the air for minutes.

Would've assumed that those who consistently wear a mask are on average more risk averse and/or concerned for the welfare of others than those who don't. Would've thought this would also be a good indicator of how likely that group would be to engage in other mitigating measures.

More likely to socially distance when other people are around, but perhaps also more likely to put themselves in situations where other people are around. This study doesn’t dispute that, does it?
