Preprint for our paper ‘Robot Right? Let’s Talk about Human Welfare Instead’ is up on arXiv . & I argue not just to deny robots ‘rights’, but to deny that robots are the kinds of things that could be granted rights in the first place. 1/

I want to do this, but with a giant watermelon, where you get to see a rich person stuff their face and then see how many drops trickle down from their chin for you to hopefully get a taste off the floor

This is why I had my undergrads read Winner's "Do artifacts have politics?" on day 1 of their "Computing and Society" course. We all have politics, as do all the artifacts we create...

Question of DeepLearning folks: Are there established methods for forcing models to develop different kinds of feature maps? (i.e. maps that emphasize different kinds of information like color vs orientation)

That this paper repeatedly emphasizes the impacts of current and hypothetical "human-like" AI on marginalized actual humans shows exactly why technology needs to be deeply informed by a diverse cross-section of humanity instead of tech-bro capitalism.

Future AI wars won't be explosion-filled battles against The Matrix or Skynet, but between wheelchair users and pizza delivery robots. Fascinating paper about how we conceive of ourselves in relation to present and future AI and how it's actually used.

For “personality testing” read “conformity to ethnocentric norms”

Many young people in Ireland, who’ve lived there since they were small children, can’t vote because they can’t afford the €1125 citizenship fee:

Strange that this paper keeps evoking some really strong responses. The paper has "an explicit political objective" is not a criticism, btw. Our position is not apolitical and neither is yours. CC:

exactly. aircraft can kill people, and do useful things, but they don't have rights. They have a human Design Authority, a human Licensed Operator, etc. Robots need to be like that.

rather different, and much more interesting. To talk about robot rights, we have to "see" the robot as a complete, self-sufficient entity, a "pregnant Gestalt", rather than what it is - an ontologically dependent entity. So the humans connected to it do indeed become invisible.

Nice way to highlight & disorient 'benign' parts surveillance capitalism: walked around Berlin w/ wagon full of 99 smartphones running Google Maps thus creating 'traffic jams' & changing green streets to red: I feel might enjoy this

I would say "not all of science", but, heck, so much of it is this. And often by people with more power than their target. It's not just "criticise", it's sanctimonious violence. Yet, some resistance exists. Some people who do help, who point to better places, who make kinship...

Okay, at this point I'm done with . They may have tried to be an org advocating viewpoint diversity, but it's clear at this point they are themselves driving specific right-wing viewpoints. Them promoting scientific racism is my last straw.
