If you know where someone lives and works, then its trivial to pick them out from a location dataset: they are the only person who spends nights in their house and days in their office. Once you have picked them out, you can follow them everywhere.... For example, 3/

Its hard to imagine legitimate uses of individual-level data. Most commercial interests care about statistical information: e.g. a retailer might care about the demographics and interests of their customers, and a hedge fund might care about where people are spending money. 5/

And it -is- possible to provide this kind of statistical information with protections like differential privacy, which make the kind of invasive stalking carried out by the NYtimes impossible, while still being useful in most legitimate use-cases 6/

So this seems like a great place for privacy regulation: this is a case where current practice can clearly be abused, and yet we have technology available that can prevent this kind of abuse in ways that aren't entirely antithetical to commercial interests. 7/7
