Getting a PhD changes people at very least. One of my editors had a PhD in Art History, and I could observe this aspect of the PhD in her. Eg she would change my work in ways I didn't always understand, like indicating a portrait WAS of Shakespeare, despite its wobbly provenance

But don't get me wrong, my editor with the PhD was one of the finest I ever had, including keen on fairness. And, e.g. she moved my indexing of one article from Byzantine to late-Roman Empire--something I did not consider, and this was the sort of thing she could do

I've never understood this. At what stage do such meetings take place? If it's for compiling a short list then you can afford to hire a conference room (or do skype interviews). If it's for interviewing the short list then you can afford to pay for them to come to campus.

It’s for compiling the short list, and it’s totally ridiculous. It costs candidates, many of whom are not serious contenders for the actual shortlist, a ton of money, and Skype has been a thing for a really long time. There’s no excuse

That’s better than the times when you sit in a chair and one of the (invariably male) professors lies on the bed instead.
