    1) Trump is a kind of litmus test for competing notions of success in the US. From one angle, he’s a failure at everything but reality TV: steaks, vodka, casinos, for-profit education, bankruptcies, etc. From another angle, he’s benefitted himself through every kind of failure.

        2) His presidency is turning out the same way: objective failure that benefits him. But there’s a significant subset of people in the US who see failure for personal gain as admirable success...

        3) In other words, for many people, the definitions of success and of selfishness basically collapse into one another. For my part, I think these words mean different things for good reason. I think success should be subject to empirical measures beyond ‘did it help ME.’

        4) Accordingly, a speculative tweet: the kind of relativism that collapses ‘success’ with ‘greed’ and ‘selfishness’ doesn’t belong to postmodernism. It belongs to the lie that is corporate culture and hypercapitalism, a lie that postmodern theorists diagnosed...

        5) It’s a simple lie: this thing we’re doing to benefit us and us only at your expense? ‘We’re doing it for you. You want it. It’s a service. It will change your life for the better if you buy it.’

        6) To call Trumpian post-truth politics ‘postmodernist’ is a massive category error. Trumpian relativism is the me-first, say-anything relativism of the sales pitch, not the epistemological challenge of the postmodern condition /end

Okay... a bit scruffy from DBB XXII but... this is the ultimate test of multiculturalism. Selfish, short-timer nihilism vs constructive, adaptive approaches that deliberately unbalance the “natural” “winners” and “losers”. Uncomfortable because “winning” and “losing” flex.

Tax breaks for the rich. Government tax revenues fall. Impose tariffs on imports, payable to the Government. Working/middle classes pay more for the tariffed items. Trump supporters cheer! Once a con-man, always a con-man. Simple logic. @cnn @smerconish @msnbc @morningjoe

Jeez this is nonsense. To conflate all of “corporate culture” with Trump-style grifting is the worst kind of reductionist bullshit. Suggest you spend some time in an actual corporate workplace.

You're right about corporate culture, but he could just as easily be referring to the traveling snake oil salesmen of old. He didn't specifically say this was modern, common, or good. In that context, I think the argument holds up.
