NYS deserves a Chief judge who has a history of defending and strengthening labor and reproductive rights. Hector LaSalle isn't it. Our statement calling for the NYS Senate to reject the nomination of Hector LaSalle 👇

Today, my colleagues and I are calling on the NYS Senate to reject the nomination of Hector LaSalle to the Court of Appeals. His record on labor and reproductive rights, in particular, is not in line with our Brooklyn values. Our state deserves better.
Brooklyn District Leaders issue the below joint statement:

“When Chief Judge Janet DiFiore resigned in August, it provided Governor Kathy Hochul a unique opportunity to rebalance the New York State Court of Appeals. While the United States Supreme Court is systematically dismantling our rights, New York State must be a beacon for the rights of women, workers, and of our LGBTQIA neighbors.

That is why we are disturbed by the nomination of Justice Hector LaSalle to fill the vacancy; a record that does not live up to the values that New Yorkers deserve. Justice LaSalle’s record of protecting crisis pregnancy centers and weakening the rights of unions are not acceptable to who we are and aspire to be. We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate as a whole to vote no and for the Governor to consider a Chief Judge with a proven history that will uplift our values as New Yorkers.”

Run for office to do something, not be something. Candidate quality a huge reason why voter turnout is so low.

More than 600 New York State elected officials, organizations, and community leaders are formally calling for a change in NY Dems leadership. If we’re going to thrive after this election, we need to clean things up from the very top and activate communities across the state. 💪🏽

I join this call because we need state party leadership that is committed to investing in every community, fighting for every vote, and showing up to lead. nytimes.com/2022/11/14/nyr

We beat expectations across many states on EDay - but NY came up short in too many congressional, state senate & assembly races. It’s time for new leadership in Brooklyn & NY State Democratic Parties that invest in organizing & rigorous winning campaigns.

NY Dems spend a lot of time and resources not speaking to voters directly. It's honestly baffling.

Last night’s NY underperformance is a testament to years of prioritizing calcified machine politics and favoring over performance, strategy, & organizing. To win from here, Jacobs must go and we must recenter the party to better value community leadership and small-d democracy.

This will undoubtedly disenfranchise so many working class CC members, as well as confuse people over whom will be allowed to send proxies and/or vote at the meeting

How we nominate judges in nys is a key driver in why democracy in Brooklyn is so terrible. This doesn't change without legislative help and a movement pushing for it.

No one should be made to feel unsafe carrying out our democratic process. PERIOD. We need top-down reform & we can start with how we nominate judges in this State. I'm still collecting my thoughts post-election day. More to come soon But right now, I'm grateful to have had as an opponent He ran a campaign focused on building people up, not tearing them down We are all better off because of it. Hats off to a great race 👏

Last night, I called @AaronOuyang9 to concede and promised to work with him however I can. I am so proud of the campaign we ran. With this crazy election cycle, we brought together such a broad coalition of supporters (too long to enumerate).
