Hi, I'm Lilo and I went over my essay page limit again.

  2. Disorder means something that disrupts "normal" function. But my normal functioning is very sensory based.

Chants at LGBTQ spaces be like "trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are *placing microphone against lips* also present"

  4. But I've been questioning if my feelings of connectedness with sensory stimuli, if my rich experiences listening to music, feeling certian textures, and the sensory pleasure of stimming can really be considered something "disordered," which holds such negative connotations.

  5. The more I've been reconnecting with my body the more I've been questioning the term "sensory processing disorder" I used to consider that a disordered part of myself and dislike it. I always saw it as the worst part of autism - after all it led to so much sensory overload.

Tw: racist, ableist violence, school bullying Video description: two girls tricking a black, disabled girl into jumping and then kicking her legs out from under her. This has me so upset. We need to talk more about the intersections of ableism, racism and misogyny.

I... My synagogue is having its annual 'Disabilty Awareness Month' weekend and. All the workshops are about caregiving. Not being disabled. ... Invisible again.

TW: Ableist and Racist violence. . . . . why Biden’s comments on his stutter have rubbed disabled people the wrong way. Hate crimes towards disabled people have gone up steadily, especially if you’re at the intersection of race and disability. Hold these bitches accountable.

Yet another class where a presenter says "raise your hand if you have a friend or family member with autism" and I have to wonder when people will assume that no one in the classroom your teaching may have autism.

  11. I'll get back to this, but I have to do some of my actual reading assignments for this week. Though one is called "Art Therapy in a Decolonizing framework of Practice" so it shouldn't be too off topic. 👀

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this science based on “race science” and eugenics?

  13. Before even studying specific theories, we need to realize that racism is EVERYWHERE in the field. Our entire concept of normal is based in racism.

  14. The steryotypes existing of Black people having poor emotional control. The pattern of Black children being diagnosed way more frequently than white children with disorders centered around aggression and conduct. Even if it's not explicitly stated, there's lingering influence.

  15. Even for branches of psychology that don't adhere to this belief anymore, we need to watch for and be aware of it's influences. The way Black people - especially Black women (especially disabled Black women) - are dismissed by their doctors. Check out

  16. To be clear, this is wrong and bad. I also will not name the names of those professionals because they don't need the public recognition. If you really want to know for learning more on your own, DM me and I'll send you some names.

  17. That belief has persisted in some sects of psychology and re-affirmed by professionals in the field as recently as 1989 (that I'm aware of - I wouldn't be shocked if there has been reaffirmation of this theory any more recently.)

  18. The first president of the American Psychological Association believed that different races were at different levels of biological development. He believed that Black and Asian people were members of a race that was in "incomplete development"

  19. CW: racism - I want to recognize that though this entire thread centers around race and racism, some sections talking about specific people and incidents may be more explicit than others. The next few tweets are one of them.

  20. An example: A white psychologist coming from a individualistic culture may see the interdependence and connection that a client from a collectivistic culture has to their family as a negative (i.e. you should be able to take care of yourself!) But miss their own isolation.

  21. When even stepping into the field of mental health, we need to remember who (white, middle class, abled, straight, cis men) the concept of "normal" is based off of. Who IQ tests are modeled after. Who diagnosis criteria are based on. Who's culture is held as the standard.
