Q2. Ok so detecting dementia is important - paper uses informant tools. How 'real world' is this given probs with collateral hx #genmedjc
-
-
& i can't help but wonder small subtle chronic changes perhaps missed by NOK who sees patient often/lives with them?
#genmedjc -
Could be the case. IQCODE/AD8 should be part of a broader assessment. But NB currently a lot of dementia goes in & out of hosp w/o detection
-
The IQCODE is 5 mins or so and could be used to screen to improve this - so that at least some are flagged for potential follow-up
-
I like the concept of using this quick assessment as an indicator for need to refer for follow-up assessment.
-
Let's say family say 'we are worried about memory' - what to do next in a hospital ward? IQCODE/AD8 reasonable as part of work up.
-
Do we consider this only in patients where there is an expression of concerns about memory or all patients with delirium?
-
All older patients with
#delirium - around 2/3 have dementia too, but dementia often undetected. -
Given patients with dementia are so vulnerable to getting delirium I'm not surprised that it is as high as 2/3 of patients.

That's a really good point - seen some of this lately myself. Of course you end up speaking to several family members during an admission...
