    The skin can be very fragile - particularly in the elderly. Make sure everything is padded during the operation. If the patient is in an unusual position for surgery (prone, lateral etc) why not check the patient’s range of movements before anaesthesia?

    To clarify - operating on hip fractures is a life saving operation, and most of our patients return home. However, even when we are unable to save their lives, operating is still vital for symptom control and allowing a comfortable death.
