Friendly reminder that the same people who argue "nuclear power is bad because there is no solution to the nuclear waste problem" are the same people who protest against solutions to the nuclear waste problem.

Unintended consequence of the Fukushima disaster: Japan closed nuclear power plants, and now plans to build as many as 22 new coal-burning plants at a time when the world needs to slash carbon dioxide emissions to fight climate change.

  3. Never forget Berkeley’s original pointless declaration of itself as a “nuclear-free zone.” It is continuing a long tradition of counter-productive inaction and NIMBYism.

Last week, I had lunch with a classmate who had retired from Marsh (ins company mentioned in article) Spent his career servicing policies for nuclear plants. Smiled as he reflected on years of multimillion $$ premiums with no payouts.

Why was it when solar and wind were expensive yrs ago the policies to build lots of low-C energy & reduce costs were based on gov intervention (eg targets, subsidies etc), but when talking about new nuclear those supporting the above are now suddenly economically conservative 🤔

While reading the recently issued ANS Special Report on importance of consensus standards, I came across an important paragraph that offers a “teachable moment.”

Just when Korea achieved the 40-year project of a 100% domestic nuclear supply chain and was building for 1/2 the cost of Hinkley... President Moon set about destroying it.

This isn't a good faith effort, but it's still interesting In any event, California's 100% by 2030 Clean Energy Standard doesn't actually "exclude" nuclear or hydro It only mandates 60% RE and leaves 40% open to other zero-C resources

  12. Bernie’s appointments to would be five clones of Gregory Jaczko. So... fairly similar to Obama’s appointments, but all of them ideologically committed to dismantling the nuclear industry, instead of just one.

  13. Experts who characterize LNT like this—omitting the part about tiny doses posing proportionately tiny risks and instead emphasizing that tiny doses have non-zero risks—are deliberately stoking public fear of tiny doses. One has to wonder why... 🤔

On the topic of "solving" climate change: I feel like everyone should agree that the "diabetes" analogy is near-perfect: it can be managed/treated or made worse with neglect. You'll live with it forever, but its effect on your life might be tiny or huge depending on your choices.

  15. Of course, there's a problem of endogenous selection into treatment. Plants that are running behind schedule for whatever reason are more likely to be exposed to the treatment. But you can instrument for selection quite simply: the date construction began.

  16. Here's one I used: Compare nuclear power plants that finished construction just before the Three Mile Island accident to those that finished just after. Control for everything you can. Which group of plants do you think took longer to build?

  17. “...The government bluntly insists that it has the absolute and unreviewable power to destroy the Nation.” In a democratic, constitutional government, bad-but-constitutional decisions are reviewable by the voters, not the judiciary.

  18. This is the correct decision. The USA is (was intended / aspires to be) governed by the rule of law. That means domestic policy, including climate policy, must originate in the legislative branch, as our constitution prescribes.

The US needs a think tank/advocacy organization dedicated to figuring out how to build high-quality public infrastructure at low cost and on schedule, and then passing legislation to make it happen.

Pickering nuclear power plant had a false alarm today. I remember the 53 real alarms in 2005. Not Nuclear but Coal related smog alerts. Nuclear allowed the Ontario coal phase out which improved health and air quality and helped save 1000’s of lives and 10,000 hospitalizations/yr
