3 of 4) 🐾 Seizure alert dogs warn handler of an oncoming seizure. 🐾 Diabetic alert service dogs inform their handlers of low or high blood sugar event before it becomes dangerous. 🐾 Service dogs can be trained to alert other family members if their handler needs assistance.

2 of 4) They can: 🐾 Turn on/off lights 🐾 Open doors 🐾 Pick-up dropped items (such as keys) 🐾 Retrieve items (such as a cell phone) 🐾 Press buttons on an elevator or button to open automatic doors, etc. 🐾 Be taught to "brace" so handler can put weight on dog for stability.

2) Studies have found when matched w/a service dog, vets w/PTSD do better w/emotional well-being & overall mental health in addition to experiencing reduced symptoms of PTSD. A service dog might not be right 4 everyone, but if you're having suicidal thoughts reach out. 👇

1) “Since introducing Lilly into my life, I no longer dwell on thoughts of ending my life.” Jim & Lilly, March 2015 grads. Sept is National Service Dog Month & Suicide Prevention. SBF trains psychiatric service dogs for combat-vets often w/suicidal ideations b4 coming into SBF.

3) Larry & Odie were big supporters of SBF, raising awareness & fundraising to help the program. While there was a lot of work, Odie also knew how to have fun. His favorite pastime was playing ball. Goodbye to a wonderful companion, to a sweet soul. We will miss you Odie. 💜

2) Odie & his handler, Larry, graduated from SBF in Sept 2016. Odie was the most loyal companion. He accompanied Larry everywhere. Larry felt the famous quote, “in my darkest hour, I reached for a hand and found a paw” was perfect to describe their relationship.

1) This morning we are taking a moment of silence to say good-bye to beloved service dog, Odie. These posts are always difficult to write, and Odie’s is no exception. He was a wonderful dog, so well-mannered, so sweet that within moments of meeting him, you knew you were smitten.

Do you find it difficult to ignore a dog if you encounter one when shopping? We get it, they look cuddly but these well-behaved animals are doing important work. Take Max, for instance. He looks like he would love snuggles, but he is training to help his handler, Woody.
