Getting satellite tags on tawaki moulting along the East coast. Step 1: finding a needle in a haystack. Step 2: contort into impossible rock crevices. Step 3: come to terms with the fact that it actually can be done.

Seabird ecologists wear mud, bird crap, fish-filled vomit and pungent stomach oils over everything. Seems I can only find photos of mud and poo though! should get on this.

Hard to believe that it's more than three months that we counted Erect-crested penguins on the Bounties. And even harder to believe that in all this time we've been too busy to have a look at some of the videos we brought back. Here's one. Proclamation Island, 6pm, 24 Oct 2019

A Fiordland crested penguin/tawaki was found far from the bird’s southwestern coastal breeding grounds in Kakanui. Any black and white penguins, rather than the blue little penguin, seen on Otago beaches should be reported (0800 DOC HOT).

We're planning our ground searches for Beck's Petrel breeding grounds. Take a flight with us into the headwaters of the Mimias River! We'll follow natural features like waterways used as flight-lines into the interior, and ridgelines where petrels breed.
