About a third of the "China Shock" job losses in manufacturing were from firms that *switched* to non-manufacturing in the classification codes, not actual job losses. Also, big gains overall in non-manufacturing. https://d101vc9winf8ln.cloudfront.net/documents/30626/original/BHKL_3-20-19_v2.pdf?1554902707 …

Wait a few years, there will be a series of paper on "Trump's trade war shocks" each one contradicting the findings of the previous one. In the process, some people will receive accolades and tenure.

Haven’t read the paper yet, but wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that effect is endogenous?

However the people who got jobs in the new non-manufacturing industry were not the same people who lost there manufacturing job.

But Alex’s point is the number people who lost their manufacturing jobs in the first place is much lower than commonly thought. Their manufacturing job became a non-manufacturing job for statistical purposes.

How do you know people didn't lose jobs at the same time. (Haven't read article yet.)
