A few days ago, I criticized testimonies from @MichaelEMann and @curryja. That was a spontaneous reaction to what I saw and perhaps not fair because part of the video was missing. So, I went back to read the testimonies for a hopefully better reasoned critique.https://twitter.com/ASchmittner/status/1143716517789331456 …

@curryja’s report, which neglects to mention the scientific evidence that links human-caused global warming to increases in wild fires, you come away with the impression that there is no human influence on extreme weather events, which is false.Show this thread -
Having testimonies from rather extreme sides of the spectrum of climate scientists gives the false impression of a big discrepancy within the science community. To the contrary I think most scientists (including Mann and Curry) agree on many issues.
Show this thread -
E.g. that humans are responsible for much of the global warming over the past decades and that this leads to increased heat waves and decreased cold snaps.

Most scientists would probably also agree that most other extreme events are more difficult to attribute to human-caused climate change. If there is an effect it is probably currently relatively small compared with natural variability (e.g. for hurricanes).

In summary, I feel more balanced testimonies could have communicated this broad consensus better.

less cold = more disease-carrying mosquitoes & ticks that live here, thanks a lot.

The discussion was on weather related emergency response. Damage from "cold snaps" is nowhere the level of concern that floods, hurricanes, and fires pose. No reason to bring up reduced "cold snaps".

So a decrease in cold snaps is good eh? Only you do know (I doubt it) that a nice bitter winter snap is a great way of killing the over-winter pest load? That milder winters see a spring explosion of crop pests? So NOT a good thing at all!

Fair point. Good and bad are value judgments, which are outside of the science. Perhaps someone can come up with a reason that heat waves are good.

It's as if the 3 Gorges Dam is about to break and while engineers try to point out, that hundreds of thousands of people might die, "deniers" come along and ask: But what about the positive effects? Millions of tonnes of fertile mud/soil would cover millions of km^2.
