The reactor 4 control room where the Chernobyl disaster began is being opened to visitors. The president says more tourism there will grow Ukraine's economy. Survivors say it will raise awareness. Doctors say it'll put people at risk of inhaling radiation

"There were rumours of people who went down there & never came back again": An Albanian town wants to finally open to the public an entire underground city built by the Hoxha regime. I climbed around bunkers in Albania but this is next level.

European Court of Human Rights awards 50 Russians more than one million euros in police brutality ruling, but new constitutional reforms proposed by Putin could strengthen the supremacy of Russian law over international law:

A Rostov woman went to Wuhan for new year's & was caught in the coronavirus shutdown. She & 143 other Russians have been evacuated by military planes, but ended up in an old sanatorium in Siberia rather than Moscow. Now she can't leave her room for 14 days

Japan, where 1,000 people died in a heatwave linked to climate change in 2018, is building up to 22 new coal power plants (that aren't that much cheaper). After Fukushima 4/5 of energy there already comes from fossil fuels

So what's the most likely explanation why the Dyatlov trekkers fled into the blizzard & certain death? Well, you'll have to just read the article to find out ;) 11/11

The Russian love for conspiracy theories means whatever the new investigation finds, the Dyatlov mystery probably won't be solved. Already relatives have called for yet another investigation because this one ruled out “criminal” explanations in favor of natural phenomena 10/11

Even Yury Yudin, who went part of the way with the Dyatlov group, said he believed his friends "saw something they shouldn't have" & were forced at gunpoint to fabricate a scene to confuse investigators. Dyatlov's sister told me her family thought the military was involved 9/11

Soviet paranoia+Putin denialism=a Russia obsessed with conspiracy theories, & the Dyatlov incident is a lightning rod for them. Yetis, Arctic dwarves, berserk deer, vacuum bombs, angry shamans, magic mushrooms, the military KGB or CIA—they've all been blamed for their deaths 8/11

But unlike in the US (Trump blurs the line), in Russia conspiracy theories often come from the top down. Putin's government, like the tsarists & Soviets, mobilized conspiracy theories to obfuscate the truth for political ends with MH17, Salisbury, Syria chem attacks & more 7/11

Amid Soviet censorship, people got used to coming up with their own explanations. As the USSR fell, revelations about the Gulag & Molotov-Ribbentrop pact suggested they were right to have been paranoid & suspicious. Cults & faith-healers heightened interest in the paranormal 6/11

But the Dyatlov students' demise didn't become known to the public until 1990, when a former mayor mentioned them in a newspaper debate about UFOs. Then came the famous article about seeing 'balls of fire,' likely documented rocket tests that happened weeks after their death 5/11

That night the Dyatlov students cut open the tent & ran into a blizzard (-40 degrees & winds up to 100 ft/sec) without coats or shoes. Only 3 months later were the last of their bodies found near a stream. 2 had broken ribs, 1 had a cracked skull & 1 was missing her tongue 4/11

At 3pm on Feb 1, the Dyatlov group started up Peak 1079, called “Dead Mountain” by the indigenous Mansi. With the weather worsening & loathe to lose progress, leader Igor Dyatlov decided to make camp partway up the exposed slope. This is the last photo the group ever took 3/11

9 students & 1 WWII vet, all experienced trekkers, set out for the Urals in Jan 1959 on a challenging route to ski 200 miles & summit several peaks. They had a lot of fun singing songs with their mandolin & making friends with a kindergarten class & lumberjacks along the way 2/11

THREAD about how the baffling deaths of the Dyatlov trekkers, once forgotten, became Russia's greatest unsolved mystery, subject of a new investigation & fodder for endless conspiracy theories, & what that all says about Russia. 1/11

European Russia had its warmest January (average temp 0C) since records began 150+ yrs ago: "It's surprising & hard to imagine. The old record was broken by 1.6C. It's very rare." A lovely ice rain is falling on my face as I write this.

For more on the incident itself, Donnie Eicher literally wrote the book on the Dyatlov Pass, Dead Mountain. What he lacks in Russian he makes up for with attention to detail, like the mandolin mentioned in the intro (rarely included in Russian sources)
