They said so many remarkable things that blew my mind, like, for instance, for many years any officer who shot a suspect was required to be arrested until he could be cleared. Or that they had to recertify on their firearms every THREE MONTHS. /2

Also interesting was how much the hiring process was about ability to cooperate and attention to detail--one major starting test required the would-be officer to go through a huge trove of documents to solve a bicycle theft. /3

My favorite fact was that traffic stops are extremely rare because officers can just take a photo of your license plate and send a ticket to your address. This is something we could easily do in the US if our stops were not so frequently pretextual. /5

The US has 300 police per 100,000 people. England and Wales have around 200. And yet, crime rates are lower and murder clearance rates much much higher. /6pic.twitter.com/0vUPBHlBLe

There's probably a good book to be written, if it hasn't already, about just how objectively superior UK police are to forces in the US. We shouldn't be backing the blue. We should be backing the Union Jack. /fpic.twitter.com/OBkuHM1uzp

We need to stop putting military at the top of civil service lists. They get priority and shouldn’t be working as officers within the community. Put them in tactical teams or whatever but they shouldn’t be dealing with the people in the community in a position of authority.

That's actually not a problem. The folks who study it find that ex-military are actually better disciplined and more likely to find non-violent ways out of conflict.https://twitter.com/liddlemocovfefe/status/1201521844001673218 …

Theres probably a strong argument that the amount of guns and gun ownership in America increases the frequency of lethal action by police either through fear of a lethal threat or an actual lethal threat. And I say this as a staunch supporter of the 2A. Just my 2c.

This is likely part of it but I think there are other dynamics also at play. Prostitution is legal, for example, and they aren’t nearly as punitive about drugs as we are. So the risks of contact are lower all around for reasons other than the lower prevalence of gun ownership.
