Found this steps from AirTrain station where windows were shattered 13 years ago in a 50-shot barrage by panicky cops. Left dead was unarmed Sean Bell. Kalua Caberet, where he spent his final hours, is now a church.

A not-to-be-seen again El Chapo said at his sentencing that he's the victim of a US justice system worse than Mexico's. The AP story that my colleague helped make happen by getting to the courthouse in the wee hours:

What it looks like when El Chapo's wife, Emma, leaves the courthouse where a jury is deliberating her husband's fate. (She really was in there, somewhere.) She'll get to do it again on Monday with no verdict on Thursday and no court Friday.

AP coverage of El Chapo deliberations today, notable for Richard Drew's great photo. (The no-verdict story, not so much):

A jury note at El Chapo trial requests another batch of transcripts of cooperator testimony and asks: if killing someone for "personal reasons" can be a drug-trafficking crime? Judge says it can't be if it was "wholly personal" and "unrelated to drug-trafficking." Go figure.

It’s Day 3 of jury deliberations at the El Chapo trial and not a peep out of the jurors, except ... they want to go home at 4:15.

There was a stampede to the Chapo courtroom today after a false rumor of a verdict. Here's the less-dramatic, no-way-to-read-the-tea-leaves reality for now:

The similar-height actor who played the "Narcos: Mexico" El Chapo showed up to check out the trial today. Outside court, he soaked up the attention for almost as long as one of Guzman's tunnel escapes.

With another cooperator on deck to testify against El Chapo, the judge has barred publishing recognizable images of him. A court order found that an already "significant safety risk" of flipping against a vengeful cartel would become even riskier if his face is out there.
