    was shot late in 1865 at Ford's Theatre. He would die the following morning. The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, escaped and evaded a huge manhunt until he was cornered and killed on April 26.

    A frequent question: what's your most unusual artifact? Our usual answer is this portrait of HST carved into a coconut. Acquired in Puerto Rico by Kansas City Mayor & friend of HST Bryce Smith, given to the Library by Mr. Smith's daughter.
